The UAE has declared a two-month grace period for residence visa violators starting September 1, 2024. This announcement was made on August 1. It provides an opportunity for violators to regularize their status or exit the country without facing fines.
The Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security stated, “This initiative aims to give violators a new chance to regularize their status according to the law. It reflects the values of compassion and tolerance upon which the UAE is built.”
Last year, the fine for visa overstays was standardized. Residents, tourists, and visit visa holders now pay Dh50 per day instead of Dh100 for overstaying.
Renewing Residence Visas
Residence visas in the UAE vary based on type and sponsor. Sponsored visas can last for 1, 2, or 3 years. Self-sponsored visas can be valid for up to 5 or 10 years. For sponsored visas, the dependent’s visa expiration date will not exceed that of the sponsor and must be renewed before it expires.
Renewing a visa allows expatriates to continue living legally in the UAE without incurring fines or facing legal consequences. Residents wishing to renew their visas have grace periods lasting up to six months after their residence permit is canceled or expired. This allows them to stay in the country legally during this time.
