Nvidia has secured an export licence from the US Department of Commerce under a bilateral AI agreement signed in May, according to Bloomberg, citing unnamed sources.
The approval follows the UAE’s commitment to invest in the US, though the exact value of the chip shipments or Emirati investments has not been disclosed.
In May, the UAE and US announced Stargate UAE, a flagship project of the UAE-US AI Campus, agreed during a visit by US President Donald Trump.
When complete, the 25-square-kilometre AI campus in Abu Dhabi will be the largest facility of its kind outside the US, with a capacity of 5 gigawatts.
The first phase of Stargate UAE will deploy hundreds of thousands of advanced Nvidia graphics processing units (GPUs).
The initial shipments will exclude chips intended for G42, which is partnering with OpenAI, Bloomberg reported.
Under the Biden administration, Washington imposed stricter controls on advanced chip exports, limiting sales to several countries, including the UAE.
Trump has indicated plans to revoke the previous policy, enabling companies to exceed national limits if partner nations provide security assurances.
This month, UAE tech investor MGX was reported to be in talks to acquire a stake in US-based Aligned Data Centers.
MGX, launched in March last year, was founded by Mubadala and G42, the UAE’s AI investment arm.
In September last year, MGX joined the $30 billion Global AI Infrastructure Investment Partnership, aimed at developing data centres and energy infrastructure.
