The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is gearing up for its annual summer scorcher. To protect outdoor workers from the scorching temperatures, the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MoHRE) announced the implementation of the midday outdoor work ban. This regulation, in effect from June 15 to September 15, 2024, prohibits all non-essential outdoor work during the hottest part of the day.
Seeking Refuge from the Sun:
The ban applies from 12:30 pm to 3:00 pm, aiming to safeguard workers’ health and prevent heatstroke and other heat-related illnesses. Employers found flouting these regulations face hefty fines. Companies can be penalized AED 5,000 (approximately $1,360) for each worker found working during the banned hours. And a maximum fine of AED 50,000 ($13,600) for multiple violations.
Ensuring Worker Safety and Compliance:
The MoHRE actively enforces the midday work ban through inspection tours. They encourage reporting of violations through their call center, website, and mobile app. Additionally, awareness campaigns are conducted to educate both workers and employers about the importance of adhering to these regulations.
The UAE’s midday work ban reflects a growing global concern for worker safety in extreme weather conditions. This initiative ensures a balance between economic productivity and worker well-being.
While the midday ban offers protection, employers can further ensure worker safety by providing adequate hydration, proper clothing, and shaded rest areas.
By adhering to these regulations and taking additional precautions, everyone can stay cool and healthy throughout the season.
