The end of summer vacations often brings a wave of excitement as people return to their daily routines. However, for many UAE residents, the transition back to work can be a daunting challenge. A condition known as “re-entry anxiety” is becoming increasingly common, as individuals struggle to adapt to the demands of their jobs after a period of relaxation and leisure.
Characterized by feelings of restlessness, lack of motivation, and difficulty concentrating, re-entry anxiety can significantly impact both personal and professional life. The abrupt shift from a carefree vacation to a structured work environment can be overwhelming, leading to decreased productivity and overall well-being.
Abdullah, a government employee in Abu Dhabi, recently experienced firsthand the challenges of returning to work after a 10-day vacation in Moscow. “The contrast between the relaxed atmosphere of my trip and the fast-paced work environment was jarring,” he admitted. “It took me several days to regain my focus and productivity.”
Ahmed Najeeb, an engineer in Dubai, shared similar sentiments. “Returning to the bustling city after spending quality time with family in my hometown was difficult,” he said. “The transition was marked by a sense of disorientation and a struggle to re-engage with work responsibilities.”
Dr. Bino Mary Chacko, a specialist psychiatrist at Medeor Hospital, Abu Dhabi, explained that the human body and mind naturally crave routine. “Vacations provide a much-needed break from the daily grind, and returning to work can disrupt this newfound equilibrium,” she said. “It’s essential to recognize that this adjustment period is normal and to implement strategies to ease the transition.”
Dana Berri, a CDA licensed psychologist at Aman Lil Afia Clinic, Dubai, emphasized the importance of setting realistic expectations and creating a structured routine upon returning to work. “Breaking down tasks into smaller, manageable steps can help alleviate feelings of overwhelm,” she advised. “Prioritizing self-care and taking short breaks throughout the day are also crucial for maintaining mental well-being.”
While re-entry anxiety can be challenging, it is generally a temporary condition. By understanding the causes and implementing effective coping mechanisms, individuals can successfully navigate the transition back to work and regain their productivity.
