The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) in Dubai has upgraded 40% of its nol system, shifting from card-based ticketing to account-based ticketing (ABT) technology. The AED 550M project aims to finish by the end of Q3 2026.
Mattar Al Tayer, Director-General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of the RTA, said, “We have divided the AED 550M project into three main phases due to its scale.”
In the first phase, RTA is enhancing the central system to create digital accounts linked to existing nol cards. The second phase will introduce a new generation of nol cards compatible with international banking card standards. The final phase will enable alternative payment methods, including bank cards and digital wallets, for public transport fare payments.
The upgraded system will allow users to create accounts, link nol cards to digital accounts, integrate cards with smartphone wallets, buy tickets using QR codes, and access flexible fare options. Users can also manage accounts, link family members’ nol cards, and customise top-ups.
RTA is enhancing systems, devices, and smart kiosks at public transport stations to support payments via QR codes, next-gen nol cards, facial recognition, fingerprint authentication, bank cards, and digital wallets.
Additionally, the upgraded system will allow nol cards to make purchases on digital platforms and at retail outlets across the UAE, similar to bank cards.
