As part of the nation’s efforts to transform Dubai into a carbon-neutral economy and supply all of its power from renewable sources by 2050, Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) has signed an agreement to supply Dubai with natural gas to be utilised in generating electricity.
In accordance with the deal, ADNOC will provide natural gas to Dubai Supply Authority (DUSUP), which will be utilised to generate power at the IPP (Independent Power Producer) Hassyan Power Complex owned by Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA).
President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and Vice-President, Prime Minister, and Ruler of Dubai His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum were present during the agreement signing at Qasr Al Watan.
The deal was signed by Dr. Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, UAE Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology, and Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Chairman of the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy and Director-General of DUSUP, according to state news agency WAM.
Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Chairman of the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy and Director-General of DUSUP, stated that the agreement “supports the vision and directives of the wise leadership to turn Dubai into a carbon-neutral economy and provide 100% of Dubai’s total power generation capacity from clean energy sources by 2050.” “This agreement expands energy cooperation between Abu Dhabi and Dubai even further, building on the principles established in 1998 and strengthened over time, to broaden and deepen our relationships in the energy sector. “While many countries around the world are returning to coal as a result of geopolitical uncertainty and energy price volatility, the UAE is delivering on its commitment to decarbonize its power sector.”
Al Jaber stated that ADNOC would keep increasing its natural gas capacity “while working closely with our customers and partners to deliver against our strategic objectives of decarbonizing our energy and power systems, ensuring UAE gas self-sufficiency, and fostering long-term and sustainable growth for the UAE.”
