Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has initiated the study and design for Phase II of the Intelligent Traffic Systems Project.
The new phase aims to enhance Dubai’s transport network using cutting-edge technologies.
Phase II will extend coverage of the main road network monitored by ITS.
RTA anticipates that 100% of Dubai’s primary roads will implement advanced traffic monitoring by 2026.
According to Mattar Al Tayer, Director General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors at RTA, the system is planned to encompass all main roads by 2026, expanding from the current 60% coverage to 100%. This represents an increase from 480km to 710km of monitored roads.
“This expansion will improve road network management and traffic flow through enhanced monitoring, quicker responses to incidents, and real-time updates to the public on road conditions via new Variable Message Signs (VMS) and smart applications, which aid in distributing traffic effectively.
The project boosts personal mobility by integrating modern technologies and autonomous transport solutions, enabled by a comprehensive ITS infrastructure designed to meet present and future demands,” he stated.
The initial phase included additions like 116 traffic cameras and 100 incident devices, bringing totals to 311 cameras and 227 devices.
Other enhancements comprised 112 variable message signs, 115 travel time sensors, 17 weather stations, and over 820km of fibre optic cable.
Results from the first phase showed a 63% increase in incident monitoring, 30% reduction in response times, and a 20% decrease in journey times.
