Emirates is currently in discussions with Elon Musk’s SpaceX to upgrade the airline’s in-flight internet service, as it seeks to enhance connectivity for passengers across its global network.
According to individuals familiar with the talks, the Dubai-based carrier is exploring a potential agreement to install SpaceX’s Starlink internet on its widebody aircraft. With a fleet of approximately 250 widebody jets and over 300 more on order from Boeing and Airbus, it remains unclear whether Emirates would offer the service complimentary to all passengers or restrict access to loyalty members and premium class travellers. The individuals requested anonymity due to the private nature of the negotiations.
Although Starlink is being adopted by a growing number of airlines worldwide, securing Emirates as a customer would represent a significant endorsement given the carrier’s extensive fleet and reputation for premium service. However, Starlink does not currently function in China and Russia—two major markets for Emirates—requiring the airline to either seek alternative solutions or deactivate the service while flying over those areas.
Starlink has also not yet been certified for use on Emirates’ flagship Airbus A380 aircraft. The service is available on Boeing 777 jets, which form the majority of the airline’s fleet. The Airbus A350, which Emirates has recently begun incorporating, is expected to receive certification for Starlink in the coming weeks, according to the company’s website.
