Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed Al Maktoum has approved a AED1B international space cooperation programme designed to expand global partnerships in space research and innovation while strengthening the UAE’s role in the global space economy.
The announcement was made during a meeting of Dubai’s Supreme Space Council, chaired by Sheikh Hamdan in his capacity as Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence.
The initiative aims to encourage collaboration between research institutions, universities and international companies, with a focus on technology development, knowledge sharing and transforming research into commercial space applications.
Sheikh Hamdan stated that the UAE considers the space sector a major pillar of its knowledge-based economy, adding that the programme will support advanced technology localisation, develop Emirati talent and enhance cooperation between local and international research entities.
He also noted that the initiative supports the National Space Strategy 2031, which seeks to increase the sector’s economic contribution, strengthen research and manufacturing capabilities, and boost returns from the growing space economy.
Officials at the meeting highlighted the rapid growth of the global space economy, which was valued at around USD613B in 2024 and is expected to approach USD780B by 2033, creating significant opportunities for the UAE.
The council additionally reviewed progress updates from the Mohammed Bin Rashid Space Centre regarding the UAE’s participation in the Artemis programme, which focuses on enabling long-term human presence on the Moon.
During the session, Dr Hamdullah Mohib, CEO of Orbitworks, outlined plans for a sovereign UAE satellite constellation aimed at enhancing AI-driven space intelligence capabilities and reinforcing the country’s position in the global space intelligence sector.
