The UAE’s space sector continues to soar to unprecedented heights, with total investments surpassing AED 40 billion ($10.9 billion). As the country takes the lead on ambitious missions to the moon, Mars, and the asteroid belt, its progress reflects a powerful commitment to scientific exploration, innovation, and collaboration between public and private sectors.
His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Defence, and Chairman of the Supreme Space Council, chaired the Council’s inaugural meeting. Sheikh Hamdan reviewed the sector’s notable economic achievements, cementing the UAE’s position as a regional and global leader in space exploration.
Sheikh Hamdan remarked:
“The national space sector continues to grow and advance, and we take immense pride in the remarkable achievements we have accomplished over the years. These milestones have become a cornerstone of innovation and scientific advancement in the UAE.”
He highlighted the sector’s rapid transformation, noting:
“The UAE space sector has undergone a remarkable transformation, achieving rapid growth within a record timeframe and setting a unique example of development and sustained success. The country’s investments in the sector reached AED 40 billion ($10.9 billion) over the past years, with research and development spending on space exploration projects rising by 14.8 per cent compared to the previous year.”
Growth and Private Sector Contributions
The UAE’s space sector experienced 29% annual growth in the number of active companies. Private sector involvement has been significant, contributing 44.3% of total investments, underscoring the increasing role of private enterprises in driving innovation and growth.
Dr. Ahmad Belhoul Al Falasi, Minister of Sports and Secretary-General of the Supreme Space Council, stated:
“The dynamic growth of the space sector reflects the UAE’s unwavering commitment to nurturing Emirati talent and preparing them to lead the future of space exploration.”
He further stressed the importance of a collaborative ecosystem between stakeholders and efforts to establish an attractive regulatory environment to encourage global investments.
Key Achievements and Upcoming Missions
The UAE is actively leading five national projects aimed at space exploration, including missions to the moon, Mars, and beyond. Upcoming projects include:
- Thuraya-4 Satellite by Space42, launching in December 2024
- MBZ-SAT, under development by the Mohammed Bin Rashid Space Centre, launching in January 2025
Additionally, the UAE has cemented its status as a pioneer in global space exploration by becoming the first country to launch a mission to the asteroid belt and participate in NASA’s Artemis programme.
The meeting also featured presentations outlining strategies to expand economic opportunities in the space sector. Updates were provided on the UAE Astronaut Programme, the Lunar Gateway, and initiatives such as the Space Economic Zones Programme, which now supports over 200 private companies.
Fostering Innovation
Space42 highlighted the outcomes of the Bayanat-Yahsat merger, reflecting the sector’s ability to leverage public-private partnerships to drive revenue growth and foster innovation.
The UAE’s remarkable achievements in the space industry continue to align with its vision for a knowledge-based economy, where research, development, and private sector collaboration play a central role in shaping the future.
