The initial stage of a major new data centre, which was finalised during Donald Trump’s visit to the UAE, is expected to become operational in 2026.
Stargate UAE is envisioned as a 1-gigawatt data centre hub with the capability to train artificial intelligence models.
The project represents a collaboration between UAE-supported G42, OpenAI—the creators of ChatGPT—Oracle, Nvidia, SoftBank Group, and Cisco.
According to G42, the first phase is slated for completion in 2026, when a 200-megawatt data centre is planned to go live.
Data centres enable shared access to software and information via a complex network and storage infrastructure. Their computing capacity, known as ‘compute’, is measured in megawatts of energy usage.
Stargate UAE will be integrated into the UAE-US AI Campus, an initiative established during President Donald Trump’s recent visit to the Emirates.
Once completed, the 10-square-mile artificial intelligence campus in Abu Dhabi will become the largest of its kind outside the United States, with a total capacity of 5 gigawatts.
