The ICP plans to implement a tracking system on shipping containers across the country after a successful test. According to Fatma Al Hassawi from the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs & Port Security (ICP), the ICP tracking system will enable the continuous monitoring of trucks and trailers transporting goods in the UAE, thereby preventing drivers from unlocking the containers and accessing their contents.
The announcement was made during the innovation month public awareness campaign held by the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs & Port Security at the Mall of the Emirates. The ICP innovation stand, located opposite Ski Dubai, is staffed by officials who aim to engage with the public and educate them about the authority’s work and goals.
The stand is equipped with drawing books, colour pencils, and other goodies to will attract and encourage young people to think innovatively. According to ICP officials, there are two types of tracking systems — the first one is meant for containers belonging to companies outside the UAE, while the other is meant for containers of companies that are based in the country.
“We began working with the tracking system in 2021,” said Fatma Al Hassawi. “We worked with a small group of companies, and it has been quite successful. Now we want to roll it out to the rest of the country,” added Al Hassawi.
According to Fatma Al Hassawi, the ICP tracking system will ensure the safety of containers as it will ensure that cargo cannot be contaminated in any way. It will also ensure that no illegal transportation practices are being conducted. For a country like the UAE that imports several goods on a regular basis, ensuring the safety of products during transportation across the country is of extreme importance, according to the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs & Port Security.
