The UAE-based budget airline, Air Arabia, is intensifying its sustainability efforts as it marks two decades of operations in preparation for the UN climate summit, COP28, says the airline’s CEO in an exclusive interview with Arabian Business.
Air Arabia CEO, Adel Ali, acknowledged the aviation sector’s association with emissions but stressed that sustainability has become a top priority, especially with COP28 on the horizon.
He mentioned that advancements in engine and aircraft efficiency over the past 30 years have significantly reduced fuel consumption, saving up to 50-60 percent. He pointed out that smaller planes now burn about two and a half tonnes of fuel per hour of flight, a considerable reduction from four tonnes previously.
Ali explained that Air Arabia is set to launch a fleet of 120 aircraft, including New Engine Option (NEO) models, which not only enhance environmental sustainability but also lead to cost savings.
CEO Sees Alternative Energy as Future
While the CEO of Air Arabia believes that major progress will come from alternative energy sources like hydrogen and Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), he acknowledged that these technologies are still a few years away from widespread implementation.
Concerns about CO2 emissions have long been a challenge for the aviation industry, and with COP28 approaching, it’s likely to be a topic of discussion. The industry accounted for 2 percent of global energy-related CO2 emissions last year, according to Arabian Business.
Air Arabia’s approach involves updating its fleet with more fuel-efficient NEO planes and focusing on operational efficiency, including reducing paperwork and using recyclable materials onboard.
However, challenges persist, particularly regarding the limited availability and cost of SAF. Ali explained that expanding SAF production is underway, but large-scale adoption faces obstacles, as the quantity of cleaner fuels remains limited.
As Air Arabia celebrates its 20th anniversary, the CEO reflected on the airline’s remarkable journey from a small startup to a dominant regional carrier.
He emphasized that the airline has played a crucial role in stimulating the local aviation industry and fostering collective growth in the UAE’s aviation landscape. Ali’s philosophy for success includes concentrating on their business, building a strong customer base, and offering exceptional value for money, which has led to the airline’s thriving two-decade journey.
