The United Arab Emirates has maintained its position as Japan’s leading crude oil supplier for May 2025, according to official data released by the Agency for Natural Resources and Energy under Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry. In total, the UAE shipped 30.42 million barrels of crude oil to Japan during the month.
This volume represented 40.8% of Japan’s overall crude oil imports in May. The figure underscores the growing energy partnership between the two nations, particularly as Japan continues to diversify its energy sources while still relying heavily on strategic suppliers in the Gulf region.
Arab Oil Dominates Japan’s Energy Imports
Japan’s total crude oil imports for May 2025 reached 74.61 million barrels, out of which 90.9% (or 67.81 million barrels) originated from Arab countries. This highlights the pivotal role Middle Eastern producers continue to play in Japan’s energy security. Despite ongoing efforts to transition toward cleaner energy, the dependency on Arab oil remains significant due to stable production and long-standing trade ties.
Strategic Energy Partnerships Remain Vital
As Japan balances its renewable ambitions with energy stability, partnerships with reliable oil exporters like the UAE remain essential. The UAE’s consistent supply reinforces its role not only as a regional energy leader but also as a global player in ensuring oil market stability. The figures for May reflect the UAE’s ongoing contribution to meeting Japan’s industrial and energy demands.
