During his official state visit to Qatar on May 14, 2025, U.S. President Donald Trump announced a series of major commercial and defence agreements totalling over $243 billion. The highlight was a record-setting deal between Qatar Airways and Boeing for up to 210 aircraft, marking the largest single order in the manufacturer’s history. The visit also included significant defence procurements and regional security and economic cooperation discussions.
Key Agreements and Announcements
• Boeing Aircraft Deal
Qatar Airways signed a landmark agreement to purchase 160 Boeing aircraft, comprising 130 787 Dreamliners and 30 777x jets, with options for an additional 50 planes. The deal is valued at approximately $96 billion and is expected to support around 154,000 U.S. jobs annually. This order underscores Qatar Airways’ commitment to expanding and modernizing its fleet.
• Defense Procurements
The Qatari government finalised defence agreements totalling $3 billion, including a $2 billion purchase of MQ-9B Reaper drones from General Atomics and a $1 billion investment in counter-drone systems from Raytheon. These deals aim to enhance Qatar’s defence capabilities and strengthen U.S.-Qatar military cooperation.
• Economic Commitments
In addition to the aviation and defence deals, the two nations discussed broader economic collaborations. Qatar expressed intentions to invest in various sectors within the United States, including infrastructure, technology, and energy. The total economic engagement from these discussions is projected to stimulate up to $1.2 trillion in economic activity over time.
The visit was not without controversy. Reports emerged that the Qatari royal family offered President Trump a luxury Boeing 747-8 jet, valued at approximately $400 million, as a potential replacement for Air Force One. This proposal raised ethical and legal questions, as U.S. law prohibits federal officials from accepting gifts from foreign governments without congressional approval. Critics also pointed to the high costs and logistical challenges associated with customizing such an aircraft for presidential use.
President Trump’s visit to Qatar, following his earlier stop in Saudi Arabia, signals a strategic U.S. focus on strengthening ties with Gulf nations. For the UAE and the broader Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), these developments may influence regional economic dynamics, defence strategies, and diplomatic relations. The substantial investments and defence agreements highlight the increasing importance of Gulf countries in global economic and security frameworks.
