The Abu Dhabi Family Business Council welcomed the decision to establish Family Business Dispute Resolution Committees in the emirate, describing it as a key step to strengthen the legislative framework supporting the stability and continuity of family-owned enterprises. Moreover, the council said the move comes at a critical time as family businesses play an expanding role in supporting the national economy.
Committees aim to protect continuity and investor confidence
The council said the committees will provide structured mechanisms to resolve disputes, ensuring business continuity and preserving cohesion within family enterprises. Additionally, it noted that the initiative will strengthen investor confidence and further enhance Abu Dhabi’s overall business environment.
The committees will review disputes related to incorporation agreements, management, and ownership of family businesses headquartered in Abu Dhabi. Furthermore, they will consider appeals against decisions issued by family councils in line with applicable legal frameworks.
Leadership vision supports governance and stability
Khaled Abdul Karim Al Fahim said, “This decision reflects a forward-looking leadership vision that reinforces Abu Dhabi’s position as a leading economic hub. It also underscores the leadership’s commitment to a comprehensive legislative and judicial framework that supports the sustainability of family businesses.”
He added that the committees will contribute to a more stable and transparent environment. Moreover, they will help family businesses address challenges efficiently and support continuity and growth across generations.
Binding rulings and amicable settlement options
The decision grants the committees authority to take preventive and urgent measures to protect business continuity, reputation, and financial standing. Additionally, they may seek specialised technical and legal expertise depending on the nature of each case.
The framework prioritises amicable settlement through dispute resolution centres. However, if a settlement is not possible, the committees will issue binding decisions subject to appeal. Furthermore, all case-related information will remain confidential.
As a result, the council said the initiative will strengthen governance and sustainability principles. Therefore, it expects the decision to reinforce Abu Dhabi’s competitiveness as a diversified and globally connected business hub.
