The inaugural University Games Championship kicked off at the International Tennis Centre in Abu Dhabi Sports City on November 5, 2024, attracting over 2,500 participants and supporters, including global football icon Ronaldinho. The event marks a significant step towards developing Emirati sports, with the competition aimed at nurturing young athletic talent within universities across the nation.
The University Games were organized by the UAE School and University Sports Federation, in partnership with Abu Dhabi Entertainment Company (ADEC) and supervised by the Ministry of Sports. The competition, which is part of the UAE’s National Sports Strategy 2031, will provide a platform for students to showcase their skills across football, basketball, and volleyball. This initiative aligns with the country’s vision to strengthen its sports ecosystem, making the UAE a leading regional and global sports destination.
H.E. Dr. Ahmad Belhoul Al Falasi, Minister of Sports, expressed that the University Games represent a crucial step in expanding participation in university-level sports and enhancing competitiveness among Emirati students. He emphasized the importance of educational institutions in identifying and developing athletic talent, helping to position the UAE on the global sports map.
The championship will feature 105 teams from 28 universities across the UAE, with over 1,100 male and female players participating. The tournament will run from November 2024 through February 2025, culminating in a special closing ceremony. A financial reward of AED 3.4 million will be offered to support the athletes, providing incentives for their success and growth in sports.
The opening ceremony saw the announcement of the draw results for the opening matches of the six competitions, with Ronaldinho joining the dignitaries to witness the occasion. Future editions of the University Games will feature more teams and new sporting events, aiming to further establish the UAE as a top-tier sports destination and enhance the competitive spirit within its educational institutions.
