UAE travelers are experiencing significant delays in obtaining Schengen visas due to a sharp increase in demand over the past two years. According to recent data, 65% of UAE travelers struggled to secure a Schengen visa appointment this summer, while 17.8% successfully obtained one.
The surge in applications is attributed to factors including the post-pandemic travel boom, major events such as Euro 2024 and the Paris Olympics, and expanded flight options to European cities. In 2023, UAE residents spent €18.71 million (AED75.02 million) on visa fees, with rejected applications costing €4.19 million (AED16.83 million).
Monaz Billimoria, Regional Head at VFS Global, noted that the demand for Schengen visas has grown exponentially, with a 25% increase in volumes from 2022 to 2023. She advised travelers to apply for visas six months in advance to avoid delays, as the visa application window has been extended from three to six months. Rashida Zahid, VP of Operations at musafir.com, echoed this sentiment, attributing the rise in demand to the post-pandemic travel resurgence and increased connectivity.
Starting June 11, 2024, the cost of a Schengen visa for adults will rise from €80 to €90, while the fee for children aged six to twelve will increase from €40 to €45.
To expedite the process, Zahid suggested submitting complete and accurate documentation well ahead of travel dates. Billimoria emphasized that visa processing times are determined by government authorities and urged travelers to be cautious of fraudulent third-party entities.
For up-to-date information on visa requirements and appointment availability, travelers should consult official websites and avoid engaging with unauthorized agents.
