The UAE Circular Economy Council held its first meeting after restructuring this year, chaired by Abdulla bin Touq Al Marri, Minister of Economy. The meeting reviewed proposals for implementing the UAE Circular Economy Policy 2021-2031, aimed at boosting sustainability and resource efficiency. Discussions also centred on aligning national efforts to accelerate the shift towards a sustainable circular economy.
The Council considered several proposed projects, emphasising the importance of completing the first set of policies before progressing to the second. It also highlighted the potential of the ‘Aluminium Recycling Coalition’ to transform aluminium recycling operations in the UAE.
Bin Touq stated that the UAE prioritises the development of a circular economy ecosystem under the leadership’s guidance, through national policies and strategies supporting sustainable economic growth aligned with the “We the UAE 2031” vision. He further noted that the meeting was an important milestone in accelerating the transition to a knowledge-based economy, integrating innovation and digital transformation into circular economy initiatives.
The meeting, held at Landmark Group’s headquarters, reviewed key achievements in the UAE’s circular economy transition, including the inclusion of circular economy topics in the Investopia Summit. This platform has facilitated global investment and sustainable partnerships in key sectors such as manufacturing and green infrastructure.
Bin Touq also attended the opening of the ‘Landmark CircuLife’ textile recycling facility, the first of its kind in the region. The facility incorporates advanced recycling technologies and has the capacity to process 200,000 tons of textile waste annually, 90% of which would otherwise end up in landfills.
Sheikha Shamma bint Sultan bin Khalifa Al Nahyan and Renuka Jagtiani also spoke about their commitment to innovation and sustainable practices in supporting the circular economy.
