Shanghai’s Yangshan port carried out the first ship-to-ship green methanol refueling in China on as reported by China Daily.
The refueling operation was conducted by the Hai Gang Zhi Yuan vessel for the Astrid Mærsk, a vessel owned by Danish shipping and logistics provider A.P. Moller-Maersk. The Hai Gang Zhi Yuan is not only China’s first methanol refueling vessel but also one of the largest in the world.
This refueling represents a recent initiative by the global shipping industry to promote environmentally friendly fuel, according to the Shanghai Municipal Transportation Commission.
Compared to traditional fuels, renewable methanol has the potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 95 percent, according to WAM.
With over 200 orders for methanol-fuelled vessels worldwide, there is expected to be a significant increase in demand for green methanol fuel refueling in the future.
The successful refueling at Shanghai Port by the Shanghai International Port Group is a significant improvement in Shanghai’s capacity as an international shipping hub. This achievement strengthens Shanghai’s ability to allocate resources efficiently at its container port and contributes to the global shipping industry’s efforts towards green and low-carbon transformation, according to the commission.
