The Sharjah Economic Development Department (SEDD) reported solid economic activity in the first quarter of 2026, issuing and renewing a total of 18,921 business licences. Moreover, this marked a 1% increase compared to 18,768 licences recorded during the same period in 2025.
Newly issued licences rose sharply by 36% to 2,991. Meanwhile, renewed licences reached 15,930 over the quarter.
Hamad Ali Abdullah Al Mahmoud, Chairman of the Sharjah Economic Development Department, said the results reflect the strength of the local economy and Sharjah’s growing attractiveness as an investment destination. Additionally, he noted that the performance supports the emirate’s sustainable growth path.
Commercial licences lead new issuances
Commercial licences accounted for the largest share of new licences at 1,671. Additionally, professional licences followed with 999.
Industrial and “Etimad” licences each stood at 123, while e-commerce licences reached 75. For renewals, commercial licences again led with 10,289, followed by professional licences at 4,454 and industrial licences at 867.
Geographically, the main branch issued 1,510 licences. Moreover, the industrial areas branch recorded 841, while the Central Region issued 326. Khorfakkan registered 195 licences, while Kalba recorded 98. Meanwhile, Dibba Al Hisn issued 21 licences.
Inspection activity and consumer protection
SEDD also conducted 44,446 commercial inspection transactions during the quarter. Additionally, it handled 3,073 consumer protection complaints, achieving an 89% resolution rate. As a result, the department strengthened market oversight and reinforced consumer rights protection across the emirate.
