Saudi Arabia has announced substantial rewards for citizens who report tax evasion, with incentives reaching up to SR1 million ($267,000). The Zakat, Tax, and Customs Authority (ZATCA) has launched this initiative as part of its ongoing efforts to ensure compliance with tax laws across the Kingdom.
Hamoud Al Harbi, spokesperson for ZATCA, emphasized the authority’s dedication to fostering a competitive business environment that is fair for all. “The project aims to create an attractive environment for traders and investors by ensuring fair market competition and compelling taxpayers to comply with all zakat, tax, and customs regulations,” Al Harbi stated.
The program is designed to support Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 by promoting economic growth and diversification. According to Al Harbi, adhering to tax regulations will drive business activities, ultimately benefiting the national economy.
ZATCA has been active in conducting daily inspections to identify and prevent tax evasion. The authority applies the penalties outlined in the Value Added Tax and Selective Tax regulations to those found guilty of evasion. In some cases,
ZATCA may publicly announce the penalties imposed on violators as a deterrent to others.
Al Harbi stressed the importance of transparency and accuracy in tax reporting. He highlighted that providing false information, altering invoices, or engaging in unregistered trade practices constitutes selective tax evasion. He urged taxpayers to voluntarily disclose accurate information to maintain fairness within the system.
To encourage public participation in the fight against tax evasion, ZATCA offers a reward of up to 2.5% of the value of the reported violations and fines, with a minimum reward of SR1,000 ($267) and a maximum of SR1 million ($267,000) for verified reports.
