Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has announced the launch of the Al Safa Street Improvement Project. The initiative stretches from the intersection of Al Safa Street with Sheikh Zayed Road to its junction with Al Wasl Street, covering a distance of 1,500 metres. The project aims to support Dubai’s ongoing urban development, meet the needs of its growing population, and improve the overall quality of life for both residents and visitors.
The scope of work includes the construction of two bridges and two tunnels with a combined length of 3,120 metres. In addition, it will feature the widening of surface roads and enhancements to intersections and traffic light systems. Upon completion, the travel time along Al Safa Street is expected to reduce significantly from 12 minutes to just 3 minutes, while the street’s vehicle capacity will increase from 6,000 to 12,000 vehicles per hour in both directions.
Mattar Al Tayer, Director General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors at Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority, said: “The Al Safa Street Improvement Project forms part of the RTA’s strategic master plan to expand the road network in the area. This also includes upgrades to Umm Suqeim and Al Wasl Streets.”
He added, “The development targets a prominent district that regularly hosts tourism, cultural, and sporting events. The area is also home to major attractions such as City Walk, Coca-Cola Arena, schools, residential and commercial hubs, luxury hotels, and upscale restaurants. The project will also improve access to Downtown Dubai and surrounding areas along Financial Centre Street, which is home to over one million people.”
Al Tayer further explained: “Significant focus has been placed on creative and aesthetic aspects of the design, including dedicated pedestrian paths and cycling lanes, as well as vibrant public spaces that promote community engagement. These will be supported by landscaped areas to enhance the urban environment.”
