Qatar will prohibit individuals with outstanding traffic fines from leaving the country. This measure, effective from September 1, is part of new traffic regulations introduced by the Ministry of Interior.
The Ministry of Interior, through the General Directorate of Traffic, has outlined procedures for obtaining vehicle exit permits and settling traffic fines before departure.
From September 1, 2024, individuals violating traffic laws won’t be permitted to exit Qatar through any border without clearing fines via Metrash2, the Ministry of Interior website, traffic sections, or unified service centres. Additionally, a 50% discount on traffic fines for all vehicles will be applicable from June 1 to August 31, 2024.
Effective May 22, 2024, motor vehicles require a permit from the General Directorate of Traffic to leave Qatar. Exceptions include vehicles bound for GCC countries without violations, and goods transporting vehicles.
Rules for the return of vehicles with Qatari plates mandate their return within 90 days of the announcement unless a permit for an extended stay abroad is obtained. Failure to comply will result in legal actions, including vehicle impoundment.
Further, buses with over 25 passengers, taxis, and limousines are forbidden from using the left lane on roads with three or more lanes in each direction, effective from May 22, 2024. Delivery motorcycle riders must use the right lane with lane changes permitted 300 meters before intersections. Violators will face legal consequences under Article 95 of Qatar’s Traffic Law.
