MENA region excels in digital growth and innovation, leading global advancements. The Digital Cooperation Organization (DCO) recently launched its Digital Economy Navigator (DEN), a groundbreaking framework aimed at measuring the maturity of digital economies globally. The DEN, introduced at the SDG Digital 2024 during the United Nations General Assembly’s 79th session, evaluates 50 countries, including DCO member Kuwait, to assist them in identifying growth opportunities, bridging digital gaps, and advancing toward digital economy maturity.
The DEN leverages data from various sources, including official statistics and a proprietary survey involving over 27,000 people. By analyzing digital economy factors through three intersecting dimensions—Digital Enablers, Digital Business, and Digital Society—the framework provides a holistic assessment of a country’s digital economy.
These dimensions are further broken down into 10 pillars, with 102 key indicators used to evaluate and compare each nation’s digital progress.
The framework allows decision-makers and stakeholders to align their strategies for digital advancement and sustainability, driving economic prosperity and improving citizens’ quality of life.
DCO Secretary-General Deemah AlYahya emphasized the DEN’s role in empowering countries to lead the digital era. “The Digital Economy Navigator aims to enhance accessibility, sustainability, and economic prosperity, ensuring that countries are not just keeping pace but leading in the digital era,” said AlYahya. She highlighted DEN’s potential to foster evidence-based policies and impactful outcomes in the digital economy, helping nations adapt to future challenges and harness new technologies for economic growth and social well-being.
Notably, the DEN report highlights the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, particularly Kuwait, as digitally advanced in areas such as work and training, with strides in reducing gender gaps and promoting the gig economy’s positive impact. MENA also excels in integrating digital solutions for health and education.
The DEN’s insights are available online, providing detailed reports, infographics, and downloadable data for policymakers, business leaders, and digital experts. The framework will continue evolving to reflect the rapid changes in the digital economy, ensuring it remains relevant and effective in guiding countries toward a sustainable and inclusive digital future.
