Dubai Municipality has completed a major redevelopment of the Dubai Creek wharf on the Deira side. The AED112 million ($30.5 million) project spans two kilometres and strengthens one of the emirate’s most historic maritime corridors. It aims to support trade, enhance tourism, and preserve the Creek’s cultural value, in line with the Dubai Economic Agenda D33.
The improvements enhance the creek’s infrastructure, making vessel docking safer and more efficient. They also help support growing marine activity in both the commercial and tourism sectors.
Boosting Capacity and Maritime Safety
The redevelopment included raising the quay’s surface level and reinforcing its walls. The retaining wall now stands at 8.3 metres. A total of 200 anchors and 500 ship berths have been installed to improve docking operations.
To improve water flow and safety, the creek bed was dredged by 17,500 cubic metres. The Municipality also added 24,000 cubic metres of protective rock to strengthen the area’s foundation. More than 22,500 cubic metres of concrete and 1,315 precast blocks were used in the rebuild.
A 1,200-metre drainage network was added to manage rainwater. These improvements were completed with over 620,000 man-hours of work.
A New Waterfront Promenade for Visitors
In addition to trade infrastructure, the project introduced new public areas. The wharf’s total side area was expanded to 320,000 square feet. This includes cargo zones and a new promenade for public use. The walkway offers residents and tourists a scenic space for recreation along the Creek’s edge.
Marwan Ahmed bin Ghalita, Director-General of Dubai Municipality, said:
“The development of the Dubai Creek wharf on the Deira side is a strategic infrastructure milestone that supports the vision of Dubai’s leadership and the objectives of the Economic Agenda D33. This project reinforces the creek’s role as one of the emirate’s most vital trade and tourism assets and exemplifies Dubai Municipality’s commitment to making Dubai a more pioneering, sustainable, and attractive city.”
He added that development on the Bur Dubai side is already in progress. Once complete, both sides will offer improved safety and smoother marine traffic.
Honouring the Past, Supporting the Future
Dubai Creek remains a key part of the city’s heritage. Even as Dubai grows rapidly, the Creek continues to serve as a vital link between its history and future. This project ensures that it will keep supporting trade and tourism for years to come.
The Municipality awarded the contract in February 2024, completing the project on time and in line with its strategic goals.
