In a decisive move to enhance road safety, Dubai has announced new regulations that will lead to the immediate impoundment of vehicles for 30 days if drivers are caught using their mobile phones while driving. This measure, which comes into effect as part of the broader crackdown on distracted driving, includes a fine of AED 800 and four black points on the driver’s license.
Distracted driving has been identified as a leading cause of traffic accidents in the UAE, with mobile phone use cited as a significant contributor. The new regulations, spearheaded by Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) and supported by the Dubai Police, are aligned with the UAE’s Vision 2021, which seeks to reduce road fatalities and improve overall traffic safety standards.
Authorities have emphasized that the impoundment rule is intended to send a strong message to drivers, warning them of the dangers of distracted driving.
Speaking on behalf of the initiative, an RTA spokesperson stated, “We are implementing these strict penalties to curb the alarming rise in accidents caused by distracted driving. It is crucial that all drivers pay full attention to the road.”
The updated penalties will be enforced using advanced technologies, including smart cameras and radar systems capable of detecting distracted driving behaviors, such as mobile phone usage. These technologies will automatically alert authorities, leading to immediate action against violators.
In addition to the monetary fines and black points, motorists who repeatedly offend may face further legal actions, including the possibility of longer vehicle impoundment periods or even suspension of their driving privileges.
To ensure compliance, Dubai Police and the RTA have also launched public awareness campaigns, urging drivers to adopt safer driving practices. Drivers are encouraged to use hands-free devices or pull over to make or receive calls. Officials hope these measures will not only enforce the law but also foster a culture of responsibility and road safety.
Commenting on the new regulations, Dubai Police’s Traffic Department highlighted the importance of these changes: “Distracted driving is one of the leading causes of road accidents in the UAE. These new rules are a necessary step in ensuring the safety of all road users.”
