DP World has introduced a new strategic maritime route linking Jebel Ali Port in the UAE with Berbera Port in Somaliland.
Operating every nine days, the service strengthens DP World’s global network while positioning Berbera as an emerging logistics hub and maritime gateway in East Africa.
The Jebel Ali–Berbera route deepens trade ties between the Gulf and East Africa, offering a faster, more efficient sea connection into Somaliland. With planned calls at Aden and Djibouti, it broadens access to major port cities and key markets across the Horn of Africa.
According to DP World, cargo arriving in Berbera can be transported onwards to inland destinations such as Ethiopia, offering an alternative to traditional supply routes that depend on Djibouti Port and long overland trucking.
The new route ensures improved reliability, shorter transit times, and reduced exposure to regional congestion points.
Berbera Port’s modern infrastructure includes a 1,050-metre quay, with a 400-metre berth capable of accommodating Triple E vessels. It also features advanced bulk and breakbulk handling facilities and can process up to 4 million heads of livestock annually.
Ganesh Raj, Group Chief Operating Officer, Marine Services at DP World, said: “The Jebel Ali to Berbera service complements our growing investments across Africa. It strengthens connectivity for customers as we continue expanding trade links between the Middle East and East Africa.”
“By doing so, we are fostering resilient, sustainable trade corridors that generate shared prosperity for partners, customers, and the communities we serve,” he added.
Berbera also hosts the region’s most advanced container terminal and the Berbera Special Economic Zone (BSEZ), designed to attract foreign investment and drive long-term industrial development.
DP World’s engagement in the Horn of Africa extends beyond Berbera Port. The company holds a 58.5% stake in the terminal, ensuring deep-water access to major global shipping routes, while the Berbera Economic Zone accelerates local manufacturing and trade. Over 4.1 million heads of livestock worth more than USD 1 billion are exported annually through Berbera.
In addition to trade, community-focused initiatives such as training “Solar Mamas” as solar technicians demonstrate DP World’s commitment to social progress alongside economic growth.
Supachai Wattanaveerachai, CEO, DP World Horn of Africa, said: “This new corridor marks a significant step in building faster, safer, and more reliable trade routes. It reflects our long-term vision to deliver tangible economic benefits to businesses and communities across the region.”
“Our ongoing work in Berbera is already driving industrial activity and local development. This service will further cement Berbera’s status as a vital gateway to East Africa’s continued growth and prosperity,” he concluded.
