In order to handle the rush of travellers flying into Doha for the World Cup, Qatar Airways is growing its workforce by hiring 10,000 staffs.
The move is also in line with broader post-pandemic expansions. “Qatar Airways is on a growth trajectory following Covid and with World Cup preparations in full swing it is ramping up recruitment across the airline,” the company said in a statement to Reuters this week.
The state-backed carrier is currently in the midst of a recruitment drive, which aims to increase its total workforce from 45,000 to over 55,000 an undisclosed spokesperson told Reuters.
Recruitment drives were reportedly held in India, Philippines and other countries at the end of September. “It is not yet clear how many of the new staffers will be in place when the World Cup kicks off on November 20 in Qatar, the first Middle East country to host soccer’s main event,”
In addition, the airline also declined to say how many of the new positions would be permanent. During the World Cup, Qatar Airways is “adjusting 70 percent of its schedule to make way for additional flights arriving in Doha and has canceled other flights and reduced frequencies in order to free up aircraft to meet demand from fans,” Reuters said, adding that other airlines will significantly increase its flights to the country, which also reopened an old airport to accommodate the influx of global fans in Qatar.
Akbar al-Baker, the chief executive officer of Qatar Airways, told reporters earlier this year: “It will be a significant challenge to be able to meet this extremely fast-moving demand for very large numbers of spectators”.
