ADIPEC has advanced its sustainability efforts by disclosing its carbon emissions for the 2023 edition to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and offsetting a portion of those emissions through the UNFCCC Carbon Offset Platform.
In line with its commitment to minimizing carbon emissions, ADIPEC purchased carbon credits equivalent to a portion of the emissions generated during the 2023 event. These credits were acquired through the UNFCCC Carbon Offset Platform, specifically from two projects located in India.
The initiatives, one situated in Hazira and the other in Jegurupadu, contribute to the global shift from coal dependence to less carbon-intensive natural gas, aligning with the necessary “fossil fuel switch” in the energy transition.
These projects not only help conserve dwindling fossil fuels but also prevent the high carbon emissions typically associated with coal-powered plants.
“As a global company committed to excellence, dmg events embraces the importance of sustainable practices. ADIPEC, our flagship event, has started to demonstrate our growing commitment to achieving net zero. We recognise that the journey toward sustainability is both long and complex, and we are dedicated to continuing our efforts to reduce the carbon footprints of our events,” said Christopher Hudson, president of dmg events, which organizes ADIPEC.
ADIPEC embarked on its emissions reduction journey in 2021 when dmg events signed the Net Zero Carbon Events pledge, committing to the goals outlined in the Paris Climate Accord. In 2023, ADIPEC reaffirmed its dedication to sustainability by becoming a signatory of the Climate Neutral Now Pledge from the UNFCCC, which commits the event to annually report its emissions footprint.
This year, ADIPEC unveiled its carbon footprint reduction strategy, which encompasses several key measures:
- Establishment of the ADIPEC Carbon Management Plan to monitor, report, and offset emissions.
- Implementation of a carbon tracking tool for ADIPEC vendors and suppliers.
- Creation of a comprehensive Exhibitor Manual and Guidelines aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals, encouraging over 2,200 exhibitors to adopt environmentally responsible practices.
- Hosting carbon workshops for stakeholders leading up to ADIPEC to foster understanding, commitment, and collaboration toward a carbon-neutral event.
- Maximizing the reuse of materials on-site, including temporary structures, equipment, and signage.
- Integrating waste segregation and recycling facilities, resulting in the recycling of 6.58 tonnes of cardboard and paper.
- Utilizing solar energy to partially power external tent structures.
The next edition of ADIPEC is scheduled for November 4-7, 2024, in Abu Dhabi. It will carry forward many of last year’s sustainability initiatives while introducing new ones, reinforcing the event’s commitment to fostering growth by redefining the interplay between energy, economics, and emissions. With a dynamic conference and exhibition program aimed at uniting the broader energy sector, ADIPEC 2024 aspires to be a catalyst for innovation and energy action, supporting a just and orderly energy transition.
