Commemorative Name Change Marks Resilience
Abu Dhabi has renamed Khalifa City’s Al Asayil Street to Al Nakhwah Street, announced by the Department of Municipalities and Transport. The renaming coincides with the third anniversary of the Houthi drone attack in the Mussafah area on January 17, 2022.
Symbolism Behind Al Nakhwah
The term “Al Nakhwah” in Arabic signifies valour, resilience, and the willingness to endure hardships in support of others. The name reflects the UAE’s determined response to the attack, underscoring its resilience and commitment to standing strong in the face of adversity.
About Al Nakhwah Street
Spanning 6km, Al Nakhwah Street connects Al Fursan Street to Al Bandar Street, intersecting key roads like Theyab Bin Eissa Street. It is a vital thoroughfare in Khalifa City, known for its heavy traffic flow due to its proximity to landmarks such as Masdar City and the Al Forsan International Sports Resort.
The 2022 Incident
On January 17, 2022, a drone attack targeted Abu Dhabi’s Mussafah area, resulting in the explosion of three fuel tanks and a minor fire near Abu Dhabi International Airport (now Zayed International Airport). Tragically, the attack claimed three lives and caused minor to moderate injuries to six others.
The renaming of the street serves as a reminder of the UAE’s resilience and unity in overcoming challenges, honouring those impacted by the events of that day.
