The Department of Municipalities and Transport – Abu Dhabi (DMT) has outlined its major achievements for 2024, reflecting substantial progress and innovation across various communities in the emirate. The year saw the successful completion of priority projects worth AED 4 billion, forming part of a broader, long-term development agenda with a total budget surpassing AED 75 billion.
DMT maintained its key role in fostering growth, safety, and stability in the capital. Additionally, the city earned a top ten position among the world’s smartest cities, according to the International Institute for Management Development.
Mohamed Ali Al Shorafa, Chairman of DMT, commented that the forward-looking budget reflects a bold ambition to modernise infrastructure, improve public services, and stimulate urban development. He noted that these investments support the emirate’s strategic vision, aiming to enhance community wellbeing and fulfil aspirations for smart, sustainable living.
A total of AED 3.4 billion was allocated to major road and mobility upgrades, such as the Helio-Abu Al Abiyad Road expansion in Al Dhafra and a dual-bridge scheme on Al Khaleej Al Arabi Street, which cut peak-hour delays by up to 80%.
Further works included revamping Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Street in Al Ain and adding a 1.5 km cycling track, event plaza, and extensive landscaping. Over the year, Abu Dhabi added 247 km of new cycling paths, pushing the total to more than 1,200 km.
Community-driven projects, many through Al Tawajud Al Baladi Centres, advanced significantly, with over 200 parks and beaches inaugurated and the Al Bateen Ladies Club relaunched. The Abu Dhabi Canvas initiative further enhanced urban spaces through artistic expression.
The Abu Dhabi Real Estate Centre (ADREC) recorded 28,249 transactions in 2024—a 24.2% rise year-on-year—valued at AED 96.2 billion, affirming the emirate’s strength as an investment hub.
