Mohammed Fadel Al Hameli, Chairman of the UAE Paralympics Committee, alongside Majid Abdullah Al Osaimi, President of the Asian Paralympic Committee, attended the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) Governing Board meeting in Paris on Monday.
Speaking to the Emirates News Agency (WAM), Mohammed Al Hameli stated that the 99th IPC Governing Board meeting focused on the final preparations for the upcoming Paris 2024 Summer Paralympic Games, scheduled from 28th August to 8th September. The event will see approximately 4,400 athletes competing in 549 medal events across 22 sports. Al Hameli highlighted the significance of this meeting, given its proximity to the commencement of one of the largest editions of the Paralympic Games.
Al Hameli further mentioned that 168 delegations, including a refugee team, will participate in the Games, up from the 162 that competed in the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics.
Emphasising that women make up 45 per cent of the participating athletes, Al Hameli noted that the UAE will be represented by 14 athletes, including six women. He also added that over 18,000 volunteers will assist in organising the Games, with more than 160 media rights holders broadcasting the event globally.
