Abu Dhabi has announced plans to develop Sphere Abu Dhabi, a major entertainment venue on Yas Island with an estimated construction cost of $1.7 billion. Moreover, the project will mark the first Sphere venue to be built outside the United States, reflecting the emirate’s broader strategy to expand its global tourism and entertainment offering.
The development will be delivered through a partnership between the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi and Sphere Entertainment Co. Additionally, the venue will be located between Yas Mall and SeaWorld Abu Dhabi, positioning it within the island’s established cluster of leisure and hospitality assets. Construction is targeted for completion by the end of 2029.
Mohamed Khalifa Al Mubarak, Chairman of DCT Abu Dhabi, said the investment reflects Abu Dhabi’s long-term ambition and international outlook. “Together, we are creating a venue that will draw our community, visitors, creators and investors to Yas Island and Abu Dhabi for decades to come,” he said.
Venue to host immersive experiences and major global events
Sphere Abu Dhabi will host three categories of programming, including Sphere Experiences, concert residencies, and large-scale branded events. Furthermore, the venue will support both regional Arabic talent and international performers, while also accommodating major events such as product launches and combat sports.
The venue will feature a flexible capacity of up to 20,000, enabling it to adapt to different event formats. Moreover, it is expected to strengthen Yas Island’s role as a leading regional destination for large-scale entertainment.
James L. Dolan, Executive Chairman and CEO of Sphere Entertainment, said Abu Dhabi represents a natural location for the next Sphere venue, citing its infrastructure and global profile. He described the project as the first step toward building an international network of immersive venues.
Cultural positioning and infrastructure coordination underway
The project will also incorporate Emirati cultural elements through original Sphere Experiences inspired by local heritage. Additionally, plans include displaying Emirati artwork on the Exosphere, the venue’s spherical LED exterior.
Strategically, the venue’s proximity to Zayed International Airport is expected to support international visitor inflows. Moreover, its location positions it as a prominent feature during the annual Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, supporting recurring global visibility.
The project adds to Abu Dhabi’s pipeline of landmark developments, including the Saadiyat Cultural District and a planned Disney theme park resort on Yas Island. As a result, Sphere Abu Dhabi is expected to generate thousands of permanent jobs once operational.
Infrastructure coordination is already underway. Additionally, entities including Abu Dhabi Mobility, the Department of Energy, Taqa, Etihad Rail, and Aldar are working to support road access, transport connectivity, and wider site development.
