Meta Platforms has agreed to purchase artificial intelligence chips from Advanced Micro Devices in a transaction that also provides an option to acquire up to a 10% equity stake in the chipmaker. The arrangement therefore deepens strategic ties between the two technology groups.
Under the agreement, Meta will procure AMD’s latest MI450 chips to support its data centre infrastructure. Consequently, the chips will power large-scale AI workloads as the company expands computing capacity to meet rising demand for advanced models and services.
Large-Scale Data Centre Deployment
The agreement covers a 6-gigawatt deployment plan. Shipments supporting the first gigawatt are scheduled to begin in the second half of this year. As a result, the initial phase will mark a significant step in scaling Meta’s AI computing footprint.
The transaction could potentially exceed $100 billion in value over its duration. Moreover, the equity option provides Meta with flexibility to strengthen its long-term partnership with AMD, while aligning supply security with strategic investment.
Overall, the deal underscores intensifying competition for high-performance AI chips and highlights sustained capital commitments toward next-generation data centre expansion.
