WhatsApp, Facebook’s instant messaging platform, offers a payment option, but so far, at least in India, it has not gained much popularity. The company, on the other hand, could come up with a means to change that.
WhatsApp apparently proposes to give incentives to users who make payments through WhatsApp Payments, thereby emulating the payment service Google Pay of the competitor Google. According to WABetaInfo, a WhatsApp tracker, the app will soon be able to receive cashbacks for UPI payments via WhatsApp.
WhatsApp introduces premium discounts to drive usage and compete with competitors like Google Pay and Paytm. According to WABetaInfo, the functionality is still under development and cannot be used by anyone. It is expected to appear in a future version of the app. A screenshot of the upcoming functionality is also included in the post.
The screenshot reads – “Get cashback on your next payment” and “Tap to get started.” The service will be limited to customers in India, and any payment of Rs 10 or more may be eligible for cashback vouchers.
WhatsApp introduced UPI-based payments in early 2018, but the service stayed in beta for a few years while WhatsApp was given all the permissions it needed. Last year, WhatsApp payments became available to all users, but the service failed to catch on in India.
