In a significant announcement, President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan has declared July 18 as Union Pledge Day. This new national occasion celebrates the historic moment when the Founding Father of the UAE, along with his fellow Rulers of the Emirates, signed the Declaration of the Union. This pivotal event took place on July 18, 1971, setting the stage for the official establishment of the United Arab Emirates on December 2, 1971.
Sheikh Mohamed shared the news on social media platform X (previously Twitter), stating, “On this day in 1971, the founding father and his fellow rulers signed the Document of Union and the Constitution of the Emirates, and announced the name of our state the United Arab Emirates in preparation for union on December 2. It was a historic day in which they established the era and foundations of the Union.” He concluded his post by officially declaring July 18 as Union Pledge Day, emphasizing that it will be a national occasion for celebrating the country’s history and the blessed steps taken to establish the Union.
Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Vice-President, Deputy Prime Minister, and Chairman of the Presidential Court, also highlighted the importance of Union Pledge Day, calling it a historic milestone that marks the inception of the UAE’s journey of unity and solidarity. “The announcement by President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan that July 18 will be celebrated annually as ‘Union Pledge Day,’ is a tribute to the journey of Union, which was established by the Founding Father and his fellow Rulers of the Emirates. Today, we celebrate and immortalize this momentous occasion in the nation’s memory and the hearts of its people. ‘Union Pledge Day’ embodies the values of unity, solidarity, and cohesion among the people of the UAE,” he added.
In 2024, the UAE will celebrate 53 years since its formation in 1971. The UAE comprises seven emirates: Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Ras Al Khaimah, Umm Al Quwain, and Fujairah. Before their unification, each emirate functioned as an independent princely state. The unification took place in 1971 with the departure of the British, leading to the formation of the United Arab Emirates.
