The UAE Central Bank’s Dh500 banknote has been recognized as the Best New Banknote Issue for 2025 in the Europe, Middle East, and Africa (EMEA) region. This prestigious award was announced at the “High Security Printing EMEA” conference held in Basel, Switzerland, in early February 2025.
Sustainability and Advanced Security Features
The new banknote reflects the UAE’s strong commitment to sustainability. Specifically, its design emphasizes the country’s journey towards a green future. Furthermore, the Central Bank has integrated cutting-edge security features, including three-dimensional designs and advanced technologies. The Dh1000 banknote, awarded ‘Best New Banknote’ in 2023, previously used these features.
In addition, the UAE has become the first country in the Middle East to release banknotes featuring the region’s largest surface-applied foil stripe. As a result, the banknote stands out not only for its sustainability efforts but also for its innovative security.
Eco-Friendly Polymer Material and Durability
One of the key advancements in this banknote is its polymer material, which makes it more durable than traditional paper currency. Moreover, this material is fully recyclable, significantly reducing its environmental impact. Therefore, the banknote not only serves as a medium of exchange but also supports the UAE’s broader goals of accelerating the transition to a green economy.
The durability of this polymer material ensures that the banknote will last longer than conventional paper notes, contributing to less frequent replacements and ultimately lowering environmental waste. Consequently, the Central Bank has further solidified its role in promoting sustainability across various sectors.
Inclusivity and Accessibility for All
To enhance accessibility, the Dh500 note includes prominent Braille symbols, allowing blind and visually impaired users to identify the note and determine its value. This thoughtful design ensures that the banknote is accessible to all, reflecting the UAE’s dedication to inclusivity in its financial systems.
By incorporating these symbols, the Central Bank is not only offering a functional feature but also emphasizing its commitment to serving all members of society. As a result, this banknote helps bridge gaps and fosters an inclusive environment for the UAE’s diverse population.
Symbolic Imagery of UAE’s Vision for the Future
The front side of the Dh500 note features the Terra Sustainability Pavilion at Expo City Dubai, symbolizing the UAE’s dedication to sustainable development. The reverse side, meanwhile, highlights the Museum of the Future, a landmark that represents the country’s forward-thinking mindset, blending the past and the future through its innovative design.
In addition, the note features iconic landmarks such as the Emirates Towers and Burj Khalifa. As the world’s tallest building, the Burj Khalifa is a shining example of the UAE’s focus on sustainability, as it generates most of its power through solar energy.
Commitment to Innovation and Regional Leadership
Saif Humaid Al Dhaheri, assistant governor of banking operations and support services at the Central Bank, expressed pride in the achievement. He stated, “The UAE’s Dh500 banknote winning this prestigious award is a testament to our commitment to sustainability and innovation. Not only are we leading the region in introducing advanced security features and materials, but we are also minimizing the environmental impact of our currency.”
