The UAE has launched an ambitious plan to build new dams and canals, following directives from President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. The initiative, overseen by Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, aims to fortify the country’s water security in line with the Water Security Strategy 2036.
The UAE Executive Committee approved the construction of nine new water dams and the expansion of two existing ones. These projects are set to increase water reserves by capturing rain and floodwaters, with a total storage capacity of up to 8 million cubic metres. Nine water canals, stretching approximately 9 km, will also be built to manage water flow from rainfall in specific residential areas.
This 19-month project will strengthen the UAE’s ability to cope with climate change while ensuring a stable water supply for the future. The dams and canals will serve 13 residential areas, including Shis and Khor Fakkan in Sharjah, Masfout in Ajman, and various locations in Ras Al Khaimah and Fujairah.
These infrastructure enhancements reflect the UAE’s commitment to bolstering its strategic water resources and securing a sustainable future for its population.
