The UAE intends to produce 60 trillion artificial intelligence tokens through its large-scale Stargate data centre as part of its ambition to become the global hub for AI.
This output, accounting for around 60 per cent of worldwide token production, reflects the nation’s goal of establishing itself as the “world’s factory of intelligence,” according to the AI minister.
In AI, tokens represent the fundamental units that measure text length, including punctuation and spaces, and vary across languages. The more tokens an AI processes, the more sophisticated and nuanced its output becomes. All data, whether text, images, audio, or video, must first be tokenised before AI can interpret it.
AI-dedicated data centres, often referred to as “AI factories,” are designed to handle massive token workloads, transforming raw data into what is described as the “currency of AI,” which is intelligence.
“Our future currency will be tokens, which can be converted into insights and intelligence that improve decision-making, enhance quality of life, and boost productivity,” said the AI minister. “We are building a token factory capable of producing 60 trillion tokens.”
No timeline has been specified for reaching this goal as many foundational elements need to be aligned first.
The Stargate facility is planned to ultimately reach a 1-gigawatt capacity, with 200 megawatts expected to be operational by 2026. This forms part of a larger 5-gigawatt AI campus in Abu Dhabi.
