In 2023, UAE residents aiming to travel to Europe faced significant financial setbacks, with rejected Schengen visa applications costing them a staggering Dh16.8 million (€4.19 million), as reported recently.
According to Schengen Visa Info, the rejection rate for visa applications from the UAE rose to 22.44%, marking a 25% increase from the previous year. The total number of Schengen visa applications filed from the Emirates reached 233,932, reflecting a notable 24.97% increase compared to 2022.
Until June 11, 2024, the cost of applying for a Schengen visa was nearly Dh320 (€80), excluding additional service fees that vary by region. This year, effective June 11, the European Commission implemented a 12% increase in Schengen visa fees globally.
Germany emerged as the top destination for UAE expats, receiving 26,024 visa applications in 2023. However, it also accounted for the highest number of rejections, with 6,283 applications turned down. In contrast, Lithuania received the fewest applications at 327.
Spain led in approvals, granting 20,843 visas to UAE residents with an 80.09% approval rate. Poland stood out as the most accessible country for Schengen visas, approving 90.61% of applications.
