The President of the United Arab Emirates, which has invested heavily to position itself as a global leader in artificial intelligence, held a meeting with OpenAI Chief Executive Sam Altman in Abu Dhabi on Saturday, according to the UAE state news agency.
Talks between Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and Altman centred on enhancing collaboration between OpenAI and institutions in the UAE, particularly in the areas of artificial intelligence research and its real-world applications, the agency reported.
“This collaboration is consistent with the UAE’s vision to develop a comprehensive AI ecosystem, advancing national development strategies and reinforcing its transition towards a knowledge-based economy,” the agency added.
The UAE, one of the world’s leading oil exporters, is currently developing one of the largest AI data centres globally and has also unveiled a new Arabic-language AI model.
The country is further leveraging its strong ties with the United States to secure advanced AI technologies and capabilities.
In May, the UAE and the United States signed an agreement to establish one of the world’s largest artificial intelligence campuses outside America. The announcement was made during President Donald Trump’s visit to Abu Dhabi.
