A groundbreaking new treatment for uterine fibroids is now available at Al Qassimi Women’s and Children’s Hospital in Sharjah. The non-surgical procedure, known as radiofrequency ablation (RFA), offers a significant advancement for women suffering from the condition.
Unlike traditional methods such as myomectomy and hysterectomy, RFA effectively shrinks fibroids without the need for invasive surgery. This minimally invasive approach results in fewer complications and a shorter recovery period.
The hospital has successfully treated eight patients using RFA, with remarkable results. “The technique has demonstrated exceptional efficacy and safety in treating women with uterine fibroids,” said Dr Muna Khalfan Sabt, head of the Obstetrics and Gynaecology Department. “Patients can typically return home the same day and resume normal activities within a few days.”
Dr Shalini Malhotra, consultant obstetrician & robotic gynaecologist surgeon, explained how RFA works. “Radiofrequency energy generates heat that reduces the size of the fibroids, alleviating symptoms like heavy bleeding and pelvic pain.”
The hospital has treated a variety of cases, including a severe one involving a 30-year-old patient with severe anemia due to heavy bleeding caused by a fibroid. “Due to her heart condition and previous blood clots, she was at high risk for surgery,” said Dr Malhotra. “RFA provided a safe and effective alternative.”
While RFA offers a promising solution, it’s important to note that potential side effects include mild cramping and vaginal discharge. Dr Malhotra emphasized that while RFA is a valuable option, the choice of treatment depends on individual factors and should be discussed with a healthcare provider.
