H.E Dr. Sultan Al Jaber, Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology, Special Envoy for Climate Change, and Cop28 president-designate for the UAE, held discussions with various officials and leaders during the Munich Security Conference.
Among those he met was Josep Borrell, the European Union’s foreign affairs chief, with whom he discussed their important collaboration in combating climate change. Following their meeting, Mr. Borrell emphasized the need for ambitious efforts in Cop28 to limit global warming.
Additionally, Dr. Al Jaber met with US climate envoy John Kerry and Fatih Birol, the executive director of the International Energy Agency, where they discussed the importance of global participation and inclusion in achieving effective climate action, which are key principles and top priorities on the Cop28 agenda. Lastly, Sigmar Gabriel, former vice chancellor of Germany, also met with Dr. Al Jaber during the Munich conference.
During the Munich Security Conference, Dr. Sultan Al Jaber, the UAE’s Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology, Special Envoy for Climate Change, and Cop28 president-designate, talked with various officials and leaders to discuss the critical priorities for Cop28.
He spoke with Ernest Moniz, former US Secretary of Energy, about the energy community’s participation and outcomes to spur climate action at the upcoming conference. With Frans Timmermans, Executive Vice President for the European Green Deal, Dr. Al Jaber discussed important priorities leading up to Cop28, including scaling up climate finance and advancing funding arrangements for the Loss and Damage fund.
In his meeting with Robert Habeck, Germany’s Vice Chancellor, Dr. Al Jaber emphasized plans for mobilizing action by the private sector to close the 2030 gap and expand the work under the Energy Security and Industry Accelerator. Furthermore, in his conversation with Bill Gates, Dr. Al Jaber discussed the crucial role of civil society in driving climate action across critical sectors, including food and health.
Dr. Al Jaber also met with Britain’s King Charles III at Buckingham Palace in London on Thursday to discuss the UAE’s plans for action to tackle climate change. His office described King Charles III as an “inspirational advocate for environmental action” and expressed Dr. Al Jaber’s honor to collaborate with him, his partners, and the world to work on solutions at the intersection of climate and nature and support those most affected by climate impacts.
Dr. Al Jaber emphasized in his first interview since being assigned the role of Cop28 president-designate that his top priority would be to keep the goal of limiting global warming to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels alive. He declared that keeping 1.5°C alive would be a top priority that would cut across everything he does, according to National News UAE.
