The Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure (MoEI) and Korea’s Ministry of Environment held the 7th Joint Operation Committee meeting on Water Resource Cooperation, focusing on sharing the latest technologies and experiences to strengthen collaboration in water management.
Co-chaired by Sharif Al Olama, Undersecretary for Energy and Petroleum Affairs at MoEI, and Seunghwan Lee, Director-General of Korea’s Water Use Policy Bureau, the meeting underscored the importance of water for life, ecosystems, and economies. Al Olama emphasised the UAE’s commitment to sustainable water management, highlighting the UAE Water Security Strategy 2036, which ensures consistent access to safe water resources despite the country’s limited freshwater.
He praised the UAE-Korea partnership as a successful model for achieving global climate targets, stressing the role of R&D, knowledge exchange, and capacity building. Seunghwan Lee noted the MoU signed in 2015 between both nations, which fostered ongoing collaboration through previous committee meetings. He expressed optimism that the 7th session would facilitate productive discussions and hoped Korea’s water technologies would prove beneficial.
Presentations from the UAE covered future initiatives such as smart water network management and surface water, flash flood, and dam management. Korean experts showcased floating photovoltaic technologies and early warning systems for urban flooding.
