The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has unveiled a significant initiative aimed at strengthening the agricultural industry and driving economic growth within the sector. As part of the new plans, farms will now have the opportunity to operate holiday homes and engage in tourist activities on their land.
To implement tourist activities on agricultural land, farms must obtain a license and allocate no more than 30 per cent of their land for such purposes. The decision was made by Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Vice President and Deputy Prime Minister of the UAE, Minister of the Presidential Court, in his role as the Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Agriculture and Food Safety Authority (ADAFSA).
A comprehensive list of 71 economic activities has been approved by ADAFSA, which can now be conducted on agricultural lands. These activities encompass a range of recreational and tourism ventures, including establishing holiday homes to support the flourishing tourism sector while promoting the UAE’s rich ancient heritage.
Furthermore, the list includes various plant, animal, and food-related activities designed to bolster the agricultural sector. The implementation of these activities aims to foster sustainable agricultural development and diversify the sources of income for farm owners.
ADAFSA has established specific requirements and regulations for economic activities on agricultural lands, ensuring that they do not exceed 30 per cent of the total area of the farm. Additionally, the farm must already possess a licensed plant or animal-based main activity, and only the farm owner will be permitted to engage in economic activities. Trade licenses for these activities must be issued in the farm owner’s name.
This progressive move by the UAE government reflects a commitment to strengthening the agricultural sector and driving economic growth through the utilisation of agricultural resources. By merging tourism initiatives with traditional farming practices, the UAE aims to create a harmonious blend that benefits both the agricultural industry and the overall economy.
