The Department of Health – Abu Dhabi (DoH) has announced the launch of new guidelines for Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA) therapy, a key method for treating individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and other developmental disorders. The initiative is part of the Emirate’s ongoing efforts to enhance care for People of Determination (PoD) and provide them with the necessary tools to lead empowered lives.
The ABA guidelines are aligned with Abu Dhabi’s Comprehensive Strategy for People of Determination (2020-2024), which focuses on shifting the perception of disabilities from a purely medical model to a societal and rights-based approach. This is in line with global best practices and aims to ensure that individuals with ASD receive high-quality, standardized care that is accessible to all.
ABA is a research-based therapy designed to increase positive behaviors and reduce negative ones in individuals with developmental conditions like autism. The new guidelines focus on improving the integrative care provided to children with autism and their families, ensuring that healthcare and education professionals work collaboratively to deliver comprehensive and holistic care.
One of the primary goals of the guidelines is to standardize the delivery of ABA services in Abu Dhabi, making it easier for families to access this essential therapy.
The new framework also emphasizes the importance of adhering to evidence-based practices while meeting international standards of care for ASD patients.
“Abu Dhabi is dedicated to fostering an inclusive environment that ensures equitable access for People of Determination, empowering them to reach their full potential,” said Dr. Rashed Obaid Al Suwaidi, Executive Director of Healthcare Workforce Planning at DoH. “The release of the ABA guidelines marks another proactive step taken by the Department of Health to elevate specialized care and enhance healthcare outcomes in the Emirate.”
Dr. Al Suwaidi further highlighted the collaborative nature of the initiative, emphasizing the need for cooperation between the healthcare and education sectors to ensure the well-being of ASD patients. “By ensuring that ABA services are standardized and accessible, we reaffirm our commitment to building a resilient and inclusive healthcare system where collaboration thrives to enhance the health and well-being of all community members,” he added.
The new ABA guidelines represent a significant contribution to the Department of Health’s mission of enabling a healthier population and delivering world-class care to the Emirate’s residents, particularly People of Determination.
