The United Arab Emirates and the Republic of Cyprus reaffirmed the strength of their strategic partnership during Dr. Constantinos Kombos’s official visit to the UAE from 23 to 25 January 2026. Moreover, the visit highlighted sustained political alignment and expanding economic cooperation between the two countries.
During the visit, Dr. Kombos met with H.H. Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan. Additionally, the discussions reviewed the steady growth of bilateral ties and explored cooperation across energy, investment, and regional engagement. However, both sides also focused on regional and international developments, therefore stressing the need for continued coordination as Cyprus prepares to assume the Presidency of the Council of the European Union.
Energy and Economic Cooperation
A central outcome of the visit was the signing of the UAE–Cyprus Energy Partnership Agreement. As a result, the agreement establishes a structured framework for cooperation in energy security, infrastructure development, and sustainable solutions. Moreover, it builds on the announcement made during President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan’s December 2025 visit to Cyprus and reinforces connectivity between the Gulf, the Eastern Mediterranean, and Europe.
Both sides also agreed to endorse the UAE–Cyprus Joint Action Plan. Additionally, the plan provides an institutional framework to guide cooperation across political consultations, economic engagement, energy, innovation, and investment. Therefore, it emphasizes implementation and systematic follow-up in the coming period.
Institutional and Regional Outlook
As part of the programme, Dr. Kombos met several senior UAE officials to advance sector-specific cooperation. Moreover, discussions addressed investment flows, industrial collaboration, energy partnerships, and institutional and academic exchange. Consequently, the meetings supported a coordinated approach to long-term economic engagement.
Overall, the visit reflects the UAE’s commitment to deepening forward-looking partnerships with European and Eastern Mediterranean countries. Furthermore, it underscores the importance of practical initiatives and sustained dialogue to advance shared strategic objectives.
