The Sustainable City – Dubai has unveiled a communal art mural made entirely from recycled plastic collected by Tadweer Waste Management, in celebration of Plastic Free July. This initiative aimed to foster community spirit and creativity, involving residents and students from Fairgreen International School and Sanad Village in the creation of the mural. Displayed prominently in The Sustainable City Plaza throughout July, the mural symbolizes the collective effort against plastic pollution.
Dedicated to promoting environmental awareness, The Sustainable City has implemented various educational and sustainable practices. Since 2019, Plaza shops have adopted a single-use plastic-free strategy, significantly reducing plastic waste. The community has also repurposed materials for constructing playgrounds and the animal sanctuary, utilizing construction waste to minimize their environmental footprint.
Dubai recently enacted a complete ban on single-use bags, including plastic, paper, and biodegradable options, with plans to extend the ban to other single-use plastic items such as straws, cups, cutlery, and food containers by 2026.
“The Sustainable City is committed to fostering an educational culture that empowers residents and visitors to engage deeply with environmental issues,” said a spokesperson from The Sustainable City. “This mural project not only promotes creativity and community engagement but also serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of sustainability and the ongoing fight against plastic pollution.”
