Today marks 18 years since Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, assumed responsibility of the Council of Ministers.
On January 4, 2006, Sheikh Mohammed became the Ruler of Dubai after his brother’s passing. The next day, he was elected Vice President and on February 11, 2006, Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan elected him Prime Minister of the UAE.
Under Sheikh Mohammed’s leadership, Dubai diversified its economy, transforming into a global trade hub with freezones like Jebel Ali. The emirate’s infrastructure, from skyscrapers to transportation, set the stage for unprecedented growth.
Recognizing tourism’s potential, Sheikh Mohammed focused on making Dubai a premier leisure destination, attracting travelers worldwide with its beaches and attractions.
Innovation was championed under Sheikh Mohammed, from a thriving tech scene to the ambitious Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050, promoting sustainable energy sources. Dubai hosted UN climate talks COP28 and Expo 2020, showcasing human ingenuity and the emirate’s commitment to a brighter future.
